In the years since this film was released, some critics and fans have suggested Sophie Marceau and Denise Richards should have swapped roles. This idea first showed up in a review on a British news site following the film's premiere in 1999, stating the movie would have been more interesting with Richards playing Elektra and Marceau playing Christmas. In reality, however, while it may seem both actresses were cast against type, they were actually suited for their roles: Marceau has played complex, mercurial characters like Elektra before - while Christmas was intended to be a non-typical & non-generic scientist whose extreme beauty causes her to be ogled and not taken seriously, making her defensive and resentful around men, something Richards plays well.
