Star Trek: Space Seed (1967) (of which this film is a sequel) aired on February 16, 1967, but Pavel Chekov didn't appear on Star Trek until Star Trek: Amok Time (1967), which aired on September 15, 1967, due to Walter Koenig not having been cast. However, Khan and Chekov still recognize each other. This inconsistency is often explained by the assumption that Chekov was actually working on the ship during the events of Space Seed, but not on the bridge, and that he and Khan meet off screen (Koenig once joked that Chekov made Khan wait in line for a toilet once, explaining Khan's vivid memory of him). According to the novelization, Chekov was actually working in security during Space Seed, and managed to delay Khan while taking over Engineering. This impressed Captain Kirk enough to offer Chekov a position on the bridge later on.
