François Civil was the first choice of director Martin Bourboulon and producer Dimitri Rassam for the role of D'Artagnan. Civil was also the first actor who was cast for the project. The director and the producer had made a list of the four actors they wanted to play the musketeers, and all four of them (Civil, Vincent Cassel, Romain Duris and Pio Marmaï) accepted their respective roles. The actors were cast in the beginning of 2020.
