In the backstory behind why Jessica gave birth to Paul: Duke Leto, who was unmarried and didn't have children of his own, needed to have an heir who would succeed him as the Duke of House Atreides. His concubine, Jessica, belonged to the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood. The Bene Gesserit were known for genetic manipulation and breeding. Jessica was instructed by the Sisterhood to give birth to only to a female child, but she disobeyed the Sisterhood because of her love for Duke Leto and his strong desire for a son. Jessica used her Bene Gesserit training to change their baby's gender from female to male. Thus, Paul was conceived, and the future of House Atreides was born.
