R. Lee Ermey has said in many interviews about the film that Hartman was supposed to be an example of how a drill instructor should NOT do their job. As a real-life drill instructor, he said that no D.I. should or would ever physically abuse his recruits, and any instructor worth their salt would have noticed that Pvt. Pyle was suffering a mental breakdown. He has said that he's shocked that so many people seemed to admire Hartman, since he always saw him as an inept instructor whose ego and overly cruel methods caused his own death.
