In December 2020, Melissa McCarthy and her husband and frequent collaborator, Ben Falcone, posted a funny video to her Instagram of both of them asking to be in Thor 4. In March 2021, pictures of McCarthy from the set of Thor: Love and Thunder were leaked showing her in a Hela costume among others from previous Asgardian stage plays. While McCarthy remained coy about a cameo in the film, filming for her and Falcone's Netflix show, God's Favorite Idiot, overlapped with filming for Thor: Love and Thunder in Sydney during the same period in Sydney, making her cameo possible during the lockdown.
