Michael Mann pressured Val Kilmer to visit Folsom State Prison so that he could get further into the character of Chris Shiherlis who was envisioned to have done time there. Though Kilmer initially balked at the idea because half of the film was shot, he finally agreed and was so affected by the despair and angst-filled atmosphere that he agreed Mann was right about this activity for personal research. He then reflected upon his visit to Folsom in the last few scenes in which his character is forced to leave his wife, knowing the alternative of prison if he doesn't while also regretting the fate that he has left her to.
