Although Frank Hamer went down in history as "the man who killed Bonnie and Clyde", the actual final ambush unfolded quite differently. Hamer's plan was to flag down and offer the couple a chance to surrender peacefully, but an inexperienced posse member, deputy Prentiss Oakley, didn't wait for Hamer's signal and fired first, killing Clyde instantly behind the wheel. Within two to three seconds, four other squad members opened fire and riddled the Ford, Clyde's corpse, and a screaming Bonnie Parker with over 150 shots in a deafening volley that lasted 16 seconds. With the car still rolling slowly forward past the lawmen's hiding place, Hamer hustled up from behind, firing repeatedly through the rear window at Bonnie. When the car had come to a complete stop, he strode over to the passenger side and emptied his Colt automatic rifle into Bonnie's lifeless body. Which of Hamer's five deputies delivered the actual kill shot to Bonnie will never be known.
