Peasants in the Czech lands (at the time a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) who revolted against rich landowners in the late 19th century, were called "robotniks", derived from the Czech words for "work", "forced labor", and an older Slavic term for "slave". Karel Capek used the term for the artificial humans in his 1920 play Rossum's Universal Robots, leading to the international popularity of the word "robot" in its modern sense.
