Jane Fonda, Glenn Close, Sally Field and Meryl Streep were all offered the role of Alice Newton. Fonda declined immediately because she had retired after a series of box office flops after Stanley and Iris in 1990 and wasnt interested in acting again at the time although she did return to acting a decade later, while Close, Field and Streep wanted too much money for the part and the producers were forced to cast a more affordable actress. Teri Garr was also offered the role but was uninterested and declined.
