The special was commissioned by sponsor AT&T, which continues to own the special today. The company's rights to the special have been exercised through Warner Bros. since AT&T's 2018 purchase of Time Warner, which was renamed WarnerMedia. Most of the staff at DePatie-Freleng worked at WB's cartoon unit before DFE was formed.
