Sebastian Cricket keeps a portrait of the pessimist philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer by his desk. In a later scene, Count Volpe is listening to the finale of Richard Wagner's 'Tristan and Isolde' which Wagner was partly inspired to write due to reading Schopenhauer.
