Alan Dean Foster had written a novel which was a sequel to Star Wars entitled "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" which was published in 1978. The story focused on Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia who are marooned together on the planet Mimban where they encounter the locals and their struggles against the evil Galactic Empire including Darth Vader. The novel was written in case Star Wars had not been successful. But, due to Star Wars becoming a massive blockbuster success, Splinter of the Mind's Eye was abandoned in favor of The Empire Strikes Back.
