During the scene in which Shrek, Donkey and Fiona are isolated from each other, John Cale's 1991 cover of "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen plays. Before choosing "Hallelujah", directors Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson tried several other sad songs. Upon settling on "Hallelujah", they eventually decided that Cale's version was the best fit for the scene. However, rock musician Robbie Robertson, who was one of the people in charge of the film's soundtrack, forbade the usage of Cale's version on the soundtrack, due to Cale having no affiliation with DreamWorks Records. Instead, DreamWorks recording artist Rufus Wainwright was drafted to record the song for the soundtrack, but Cale's version was kept in the film itself, because Adamson considered Wainwright's version "too full" and "too rich", and felt that "the rawness of John Cale's version seemed to suit the character of Shrek a little better."
