The TV series' creators purposely tried to avoid or at least minimize appearances of various characters from Batman's past, as they wanted the series to be able to stand on its own and not rely on such gimmicks as "Two-Face Beyond". Only five super-villains from the original Batman's rogues gallery appeared directly in the series - Mr. Freeze in Batman of the Future: Meltdown (1999), Bane in Batman of the Future: The Winning Edge (1999), Ra's al Ghul and his daughter Talia in Batman of the Future: Out of the Past (2000), and the Joker, whose corpse made an appearance in Batman of the Future: Joyride (1999) and who is the main villain of the follow-up direct-to-DVD film Batman of the Future - Il ritorno del Joker (2000) (Harley Quinn also briefly appeared in this film at the end of it, but she was never encountered by the new Batman). Two other characters from Batman's past also appeared as well: Commissioner Barbara Gordon of the GCPD was a recurring character in the series and Superman appeared in Batman of the Future: The Call: Part 1 (2000) and Batman of the Future: The Call: Part 2 (2000) (the villain from "The Call" was actually a background character in Le avventure di Superman: The Main Man: Part II (1996)). Additionally, other past characters were referenced without directly appearing: Terry trains with android versions of the Riddler, Two-Face, and Killer Croc in Batman of the Future: Terry's Friend Dates a Robot (2000) and "Out of the Past" featured a musical based on Batman featuring actors and actresses playing versions of Robin, Commissioner Gordon, the Joker, the Penguin, Two-Face, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and the Catwoman, as well as Bruce looking at pictures of Zatanna, Selina Kyle/the Catwoman, and Lois Lane. Other TV series set in the DCAU crossed over with this one as well: Static Shock: Future Shock (2004) featured Static time-travelling to the future and working with this Batman and Justice League Unlimited (2004) had several references - the name "Justice League Unlimited" and the Watchtower first appeared in "The Call", Justice League Unlimited: The Once and Future Thing, Part Two: Time, Warped (2005) took place mostly in this future, and Justice League Unlimited: Epilogue (2005) was a story set in this Batman's future and was intended to be a de facto series finale to this series.
