Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe both reached out to Robert Eggers to work with him because they had loved The Witch (2015); Dafoe had walked into a theatre to see it based on the poster, and liked it so much that the next day, he went again with his wife, and later set up a meeting with Eggers. Luckily, Eggers was already looking for a project to do with both men before he had finished the script; he had also talked with Pattinson beforehand about other roles in films (including The Knight, and Nosferatu), but Pattinson declined because the roles Eggers wanted him to play were all too boring and normal for him.
