The film was criticized by Survival International, which campaigns for indigenous peoples and indigenous peoples living in voluntary isolation, as reinforcing colonialism and respectively neocolonialism, as well as their stigmas against indigenous peoples, portraying them as savage. When asked in an interview about the film being accused of perpetuating the stereotype that indigenous people are savages, Eli Roth said, "What's interesting is the controversy comes from people who haven't seen the film. The Amazon rights group that saw the film loved it and partnered with us to do a fundraiser (for the rain forest)."
