This was the second film based on a novel by Per Wahlöö and Maj Sjöwall after 1967's Roseanna (1967). The main character in the book series is called Martin Beck, but is here called Jake Martin. The next film based on Sjöwall/Wahlöö's Martin Beck was L'uomo sul tetto (1976), made in 1976. In the novel, Beck is presented with a gramophone record of the song The Laughing Policeman by Charles Penrose.
