Magnum's full name is Thomas Sullivan Magnum IV. His hometown was in the Tidewater region of Virginia (thought to be Hampton Roads). He held the rank of Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy at the time of his resignation in 1979. In season two, Magnum was recalled to service with the rank of Commander (skipping the rank of Lieutenant Commander). He was also briefly recalled to service in season six. Magnum's father, Lieutenant Thomas Sullivan Magnum III, U.S.N., was a Naval aviator killed in the Korean War in 1951. Magnum's grandfather, Captain Thomas Sullivan Magnum, Jr., U.S.N., appeared in the season eight finale.
