Mark Wahlberg was attached to play Jack Starks after John Maybury was hired as director. According to Maybury, once The Italian Job (2003) opened as a huge box office hit, Wahlberg was convinced to hold off committing to this movie in order to negotiate a bigger paycheck. This opened the door for Adrien Brody to sign on.
