In the film, Mr. Freeze humorously mentions the play "The Iceman Cometh" (1939) in dialogue. The play was written by Eugene O'Neill. It features a group of alcoholics who regularly patronize a Greenwich Village saloon, while seeking oblivion from a number of personal tragedies. They are surprised when they realize that a sober friend who hangs out with them is actually a wanted killer, who killed his own beloved wife in a misguided attempt to end her emotional pain. The play has received several adaptations.
