Winchester, the modern county town (capital) of the county of Hampshire is shown as the seat of King Alfred of Wessex. Historians agree that Winchester was not the capital of Wessex in the modern sense as the Royal Court was relatively mobile with palaces in many major cities of the time, but Winchester certainly was the favoured Royal seat and administrative centre of the kingdom. This status as de facto capital remained after the unification of the Saxon kingdoms into Englalond - modern England. It was only after the coming of the Normans in 1066 that London eventually became capital of England.
