Throughout the movie series, the question of how infant Harry could possibly defeat the powerful Lord Voldemort is often asked, and for all intents and purposes, the most complete answer is given in this film, by Voldemort himself. After his resurrection, Voldemort states "Shall I divulge how I truly lost my powers? It was love. You see, when dear sweet Lily Potter gave her life for her only son, it provided him with the ultimate protection, I could not touch him. It was old magic, something I should have foreseen." The fifth book clarifies that Lilly's sacrifice out of love literally caused her blood to create a magical protection around Harry, that made Voldemort's Killing Curse rebound and kill him. Since this magical protection endures in Harry's blood (which is similar to his mother's), Voldemort remains extremely vulnerable to Harry's touch; Harry's blood was so essential to his resurrection because this would finally make Voldemort immune to Harry's touch. The magical blood protection is so powerful that it even works with aunt Petunia, Lilly's sister, who also shares her blood. When Petunia is near, Harry is magically protected from harm, which is the reason that Harry had to go back to the Dursleys time and again.
