Writer Krista Vernoff said during an April 2021 interview that showing Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) in the mermaid outfit with her breasts barely covered (season 5, episode 1) led to her quitting the show. Because of that scene, there was a huge spike in male viewers, and according to Vernoff, "And then every episode after, the question would come from the network, 'How are we getting the girls naked this week?'" She said she originally signed on because Charmed was a girl-power show, but after the edict to keep attracting male viewers by sexualizing the girls, she felt she was now creating something "bad for this world" and left even though they offered her a lot of money to stay. Alysa Milano and Holly Marie Combs tweeted a few days later that they disagreed with her comments. Milano said, "I think we gave permission to a generation of women to be themselves and to be strong and own their sexuality. I'm so proud of what this show meant to so many." Combs agreed by saying, "I can attest 1000% Charmed was not bad for the world. The reasons and people are too long to list. Maybe it was bad for Krista's world at the time. End story."
