Rekha acted for the third time in a film produced by Shashi Kapoor - after Kalyug & Vijeta. Amitabh Bachchan was to star in the movie but he opted out because of his pact to not act with Rekha. Shashi Kapoor took on the role and had to gain weight. The film was delayed and went over budget. Shashi Kapoor suffered huge losses. His wife Jennifer Kendal Kapoor died during the making of this film. Shashi could never lose the weight he gained and shifted to character roles for a few years thereafter before retiring.
