In his 1973 novel "The Princess Bride," William Goldman wrote, "Fact: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is, no question, the most popular thing I've ever been connected with. When I die, if the Times gives me an obit, it's going to be because of Butch." The first sentence of Goldman's November 16, 2018, New York Times obituary was, "William Goldman, who won Academy Awards for his screenplays for 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' and Tutti gli uomini del presidente (1976) and who, despite being one of Hollywood's most successful screenwriters, was an outspoken critic of the movie industry, died on Friday in Manhattan."
