Actor Don Dubbins played Pete Conway on the pilot episode and was intended to be a regular cast member as Tony's buddy. But the producers noticed on the pilot that Bill Daily displayed better comedic talents and chose him instead. A third season episode ("Everybody's a Movie Star") made use of this in its plot. Daily had very little previous professional acting experience and when his role was expanded at the beginning of season 1, he struggled to learn his lines. He had dyslexia and just didn't have the experience to keep up with his expanded role. He managed to struggle his way through the first season and it eventually got easier for him after that.
