At the time this film was released, special effects and make-up awards were not regularly given at the Academy Awards, as they were not a frequent feature in films. When a film came along with impressive effects, a "Special Achievement" Oscar would be given instead. All three original Star Wars films received their Visual Effects Oscar in this way. This film was passed over for a special achievement Oscar in make-up effects, and the backlash led the Academy to create the category, making it an award given every year. Six years later, La mosca (1986) would win the award for Best Achievement in Make-up. That film was also produced by Mel Brooks.
