Papa Smurf is called Santa several times in the film this is due to the fact that Papa Smurf's appearance bears a resemblance to Santa Claus. In addition to joking on the physical similarities between Papa and Santa, this running gag refers to how Jonathan Winters portrayed Santa in Santa vs. the Snowman (1997) and Babbo Natale 3D (2002).
