There were stories in the media that Govind Nihalani wanted Smita for the film but Shashi insisted on Rekha. Shashi denied the story saying he wanted Smita for the role of Madanika in Ustsav. But Smita insisted on playing the lead. Shashi refused the idea because he only thought Rekha could do the role.
