The famous last stand of General Gordon was portrayed in Khartoum (1966), with Charlton Heston in the role of Gordon and Laurence Olivier playing the Mahdi. The Mahdi was a fanatic who happened to be one of many among a range of the world's religions, including Christianity, who during the period of millennialist zeal of the 1840s claimed to either be the Promised One or the spokesperson of the Promised One.
