Early in the planning stages of the series, Roger C. Carmel was offered the chance to return as his Star Trek (1966) character Harry Mudd, but he died before production would have begun. Attempts were also reportedly made to get Leonard Nimoy to appear during the first season, but fans had to wait four years for that to happen in Star Trek: The Next Generation: Unification II (1991).
