Frederic Raphael's original screenplay included much more personal background on Bill Harford (Tom Cruise); he had a strained relationship with his father, and felt conflicted about his interest in female anatomy. Stanley Kubrick removed all of these elements, as well as a explanatory voice-over by Harford where he discusses his feelings.
