When Mr. Knightley asks Emma to marry him, Emma gets a nosebleed. Director Autumn de Wilde often gets nosebleeds herself and spoke to screenwriter Eleanor Catton about including one in the script. There was originally a comedic scene of Harriet getting a nosebleed while trying to figure out a charade, and Mr Woodhouse having to be rushed out of the room so as not be exposed to the sight of blood. The nosebleed was later moved to the proposal scene. Coincidentally, actress Anya Taylor-Joy also gets nosebleeds and was able to get one on cue while filming. She described this as a favorite moment of the entire shoot and a "proud" moment for her.
