The series has a number of David Bowie references. As with the parent series, Life on Mars (2006), the show's name comes from a David Bowie song of the era in which it is set, in this case "Ashes to Ashes", which was his first UK number one single of the 1980s and features Bowie dressed as a Pierrot clown in its video. One episode also features a "Laughing Gnome" (which is the title of an earlier Bowie song).
