The studio had wanted to originally release the film during the late summer-early fall months from August-September. However they decided to release it one week before Christmas as there were not very many family friendly films on the slate during the holiday season of 1993 and wanted to attract audiences with smaller children for the holidays. Ultimately the film only grossed about $4 million less than its predecessor which was released in April 1992, and on a budget of $15 million was still rather successful for a sequel.
