(at around 59 mins) Claire and Owen extracting blood from Rexy on the Arcadia was director J.A. Bayona's idea. He pitched it to Steven Spielberg to have another moment of tension during the transitional stage of the movie, and because he loved the idea of giving the actors and actresses a practical effect on which to work.
