During season four of All in the Family (1971), Norman Lear had been considering spinning off the Jefferson family into their own sit-com. About midway through that season, he made it a definite plan for sometime during the following season as an affluent African-American family, having been spurred on by the confrontation of some disgruntled Black Panthers arriving at his office who expressed their grievances regarding his negative representation of blacks on television on Good Times (1974), which recently premiered.
