The decision to produce this series for syndication, rather than for a network, was considered a gamble at the time. It was the most expensive project of its kind ever attempted, but it did so well, it ended up opening the door for a tidal wave of made-for-syndication dramatic series (including Hercules (1995), Xena: Principessa guerriera (1995), Andromeda (2000), Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993), and Baywatch (1989)), which continued for more than a decade. Had the show failed, Paramount Pictures would have just added the segments to the Star Trek syndication package, just as they did with the remastered pilot Star Trek: The Cage (1966).
