William Hootkins's performance as Lieutenant Eckhardt was influenced by Orson Welles's portrayal of Police Captain Hank Quinlan in his 1958 film noir L'infernale Quinlan (1958). In addition to the obvious physical similarities, both characters are highly corrupt and villainous police officers whose deep gravelly voices are almost identical.
