The Na'vi were partially inspired by a dream James Cameron's mother had about a tall, blue woman. The idea of humans landing on an alien planet with a toxic atmosphere which necessitates breathing masks was an unused element from an original story Cameron had once written called "Mother"; the rest of the story had been used as the basis for his screenplay for Aliens - Scontro finale (1986).
