The Duluth Bulldogs are loosely based on the real NFL team, the Duluth Kelleys/Eskimos, which existed from 1923-1927. The Duluth NFL team rarely played at home in November and December, due to the harsh Minnesota winters with Duluth being the northernmost team in the NFL at the time. This made them a mostly road traveling team, causing them to play fewer games than the rest of the league. Their best season was 1924 when they finished with a 5-1 record, putting them in 4th place in terms of winning percentage. In 1926, they played their first and only full season finishing with a record of 6-5-3, finishing 8th in the standings. They also played their final home game in Duluth in 1926 and in 1927, they played every game on the road, finishing with a 1-8 record. The rights for the team were then sold back to the NFL by the team owner following the season, and the Duluth Eskimos were no more. The owner of the team was supposed to hold any future rights to any NFL Minnesota football team, but was only given 10% ownership of the Minnesota Vikings in 1961, with the other 90% belonging to outside investors.
