Around 2010 a story leaked out that an unnamed film studio (possibly Fox or Lionsgate) were seriously contemplating a modern retelling of this story, to be filmed primarily in Bulgaria with some interior work done at Shepperton studios in the UK and featuring several A list actors. Although no official announcement was ever made by a studio regarding this project it didn't take long before was a massive backlash among the fan-base against the idea who saw it as sacrosanct to remake it and the idea was subsequently dropped. Whilst details of the proposed remake were sketchy, names speculated as possibilities to star included George Clooney, Antonio Banderas, Diego Luna, Kirsten Dunst, Zoe Saldana and Steve Coogan, although none of these actors has ever said they were formally approached. Very little is known about the idea except the studio was planning on releasing the film under a different title and with a budget of approximately $80 million.
