Initially, director Vikramjit Singh was supposed to direct a film titled Mera Jahaan, with Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor in the lead roles, however the movie failed to materialize. He then attempted to make another film with the former alongside Deepika Padukone. This film couldn't work out too, due to the fall out between the actors, so Singh decided to make Roy instead.
