Andy Mientus originally auditioned for the role of Barry Allen. In an interview with Collider, he admitted that he didn't get too far in the process. As such, Mientus doesn't lament the role that got away. "I got great feedback that said, 'He's not quite the right fit for Barry, but we really like him. He's really interesting. Maybe there's something down the pike.'" That would actually translate to taking on the role of Hartley Rathaway (aka Pied Piper). He debuted as the sometimes villain/sometimes ally in The Flash season 1, before reappearing in season 2 and playing a new, post-Crisis version in The Flash season 6. Mientus revealed that he wouldn't have had it any other way, feeling an immediate kinship with the first openly gay supervillain and his journey into moments of heroism. "When I read it, I saw that it was maybe a good fit for me, and I just really liked it. It was a character that I wanted to see and knew I would enjoy, as a viewer, so it was then somebody that I wanted to embody. I'm really glad it worked out."
