The late Village Voice columnist and author Arthur Bell was an enthusiastic champion for Barry Miller to win The Academy Award for his performance in "Fame", but upon conducting a controversial interview with him for his newspaper column, Miller clearly expressed no interest in doing any additional interviews with mainstream publications like Time or Newsweek in order to further his own cause, stating that he felt that an actor's work should speak for itself, for better or worse, without having to engage in monetarily purchased public relations. This prompted Bell to both admire him and yet fear that it would severely doom not only his chance to win The Oscar, but possibly cripple his future, writing "Is he playing Russian Roulette with his career?" Indeed, of the six Oscar nominations that "Fame" received, Miller's performance was ignored. Five years later, Miller would receive The Tony Award for his Broadway debut in Neil Simon's "Biloxi Blues".
