The character of Dr. Fried (Bibi Andersson) in the 1964 source novel of the same name was based on source authoress Joanne Greenberg's real life doctor Frieda Fromm-Reichmann. She was a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst and was the basis of Dr. Fried in Joanne Greenberg's autobiographical hospital novel entitled ''I Never Promised You a Rose Garden'' (1964).
