Many of the characters are named for classic mystery writers. In The Adventure of the Mad Tea Party, there is a "Gardner," a "Biggers," and a "Doyle." Also, many of the actors who appeared in the series like Lloyd Nolan and Howard Duff were at one time famous for their portrayal of classic detectives like Mike Shayne and Sam Spade in movies and on the radio.
