The movie makes the point that the immortal group led by Andy (Charlize Theron) has influenced and somehow contributed to different historical facts around the world over the centuries. It's neither clear nor explained why she makes a reference to São Paulo in the year of 1834. Maybe a random year chosen by writer Greg Rucka. After Emperor Pedro I abdicated his throne in 1831, Brazil went through a troubled social-political time with revolutions and conflicts between conservative and liberal groups throughout the years that followed. 1834 is the year that the Additional Act was approved by those two conflicting groups. This was a set of changes to the Brazilian 1824 constitution that, in part, allowed only one major empire representative until heir Pedro II's adulthood, and also weakened the powers of the centralizing imperial power by giving Brazilian provinces political autonomy so they could make decisions without the empire's direct approval.
