Two previous Tennessee Williams screen adaptations, Un tram che si chiama Desiderio (1951) and La gatta sul tetto che scotta (1958), had hinted at the homosexuality overtly mentioned in the plays. This one goes a little further, but is still fairly coy in terms of explicitness due to the Production Code. They were a little more lenient on this adaptation, as Sebastian's fate (ie, murder) shows the perils of living a gay life.
